2020 Pema Gyamtsho from the Kingdom of Bhutan becomes the seventh Director General of ICIMOD, marking the first time a leader from the Himalayan region heads the organization.

April 2015 Following the Nepal Earthquake, ICIMOD scientists supported rescue and relief efforts by monitoring landslides, glacier lakes, and dammed rivers using satellite image analyses. They provided critical information to the Nepalese government and relief agencies, and worked with Tribhuvan International Airport traffic controllers to assess weather and terrain conditions. ICIMOD volunteers also directly aided relief efforts in villages near Kathmandu.
2011 David Molden from the United States of America becomes the sixth Director General of ICIMOD.
