2016 Significant administrative reorganization occurred when larger parts of Timbuktu and Goundam cercles were separated to form the new Taoudenit Region, covering 323,326 km² with approximately 134,000 inhabitants.
April 6 2012 The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad and other militant groups declare the region independent from Mali as part of the new country of Azawad, though Mali and the international community reject this declaration.
